Happy Birthday!

To two special men in my life.

To Dad:
someecards.com - May your summer birthday be less hot and sticky than the moment of your birth

To Daniel:
someecards.com - Happy birthday to someone too old to realize they should be embarrassed about still having a CD collection

someecards.com - Sorry I only wished you a happy birthday in person and not on your Facebook Wall

Hope you both have a great birthday.

Thank you!

Thanks to everyone for the Happy Birthday wishes!  It was so nice to be remembered by so many people.  However, the grand prize goes to J+A for their blog post dedicated to my birthday.  Thanks, guys.  That was very sweet.  We had a few friends over for ice cream cake in the evening and I brought in bagels to work, but otherwise it was a low key day.

I did strength training yesterday morning, but I still feel like I'm recovering from the race on Saturday.  I'm planning to do 6-8mi with 3-4x 1mi at goal marathon pace or just easy depending on how I feel once I get going.   This is my "monster month" of training before the marathon, but I also want to keep an eye on my energy levels.  Over training/under recovering now isn't better for me than dropping all my hard training and coasting into the marathon.

And with that, it's time to head out the door for my first run as a 28-year-old.

Week in Review - The Birthday Edition

Yep, it's my birthday and I'm not afraid to plaster it all over the blog to get a few extra comments.  Since the BIG birthday as still a few years away (I turned 28 today), we are just having a small get together at our house this evening.  Basically I wanted to have an ice cream cake without turning into this guy

Such a classic.

Anyway, here's the week in review:
M- Strength training, yoga
T- 8mi with 5x1000m at 10k pace
W- 6.5 easy, yoga
R- Strength training, yoga
F- 4 easy
S- 13.1 race
U- 5mi easy, yoga

This was an easy week leading into the race, which you can read all about in yesterday's post if you are so inclined.  This week I'm going to play it by ear as far as if and how much speed work to do and how long I plan to do my long run.  I was wiped out from the race Saturday- way more than when I did my 20 miler- so this week is operation recovery and get ready for the final few long runs before the marathon.

Pre-party 1

Daniel's birthday is Thursday, but I'll be in Seattle and he's busy with his summer teaching job, so we had "present time" yesterday.

Real men love Gaga (on the left), and candy I've horded since the after Christmas sale (good through June 2010!).

Right now I'm keeping an eye out on the weather, wondering if I should run this morning or hit the gym.  It's currently fine, but there's a 75% chance of rain for my zip code in 30 minutes.  It probably won't rain very hard, but it's supposed to be sunny tomorrow am (although that could change) and maybe it would be nice to have another day between my long run and my speed day.  Decisions, decisions.

Happy Valentines Day

Cute, eh? This was my Valentines card from D that I got last night because he's not so great at keeping secrets :). For two people who aren't into holidays that much, I feel like we're "doing" a lot for one of the sillier ones. It's more like we decided to do some things that happened to fall on Valentines day rather than we tried to make plans for today. First we have church and our membership interviews (YAY for being almost done with membership class). Then we're going to see the Peking Acrobats at 3pm and to Monty's Blue Plate Diner for dinner and desert.

I also want to send a special birthday shout out to my brother-in-law J who is 25 (I think...) today.

Yesterday was filled with phone conversation, reading, sleep, cleaning out my sewing/craft stuff (which has been on my to-do list for AGES), and speed skating (crazy wipe out in the finals!).

Have a great Sunday all.

Happy Birthday

I don't think he reads this, but just in case, here's a Happy Birthday shout out to my little brother. He's 24 now- and 6'4" - so I guess he's not so little. This picture was taken before my wedding, but it's one of my favorites of us from the "modern era".

Last night's dinner was very good. The surprise hit of the evening: escargot. Neither one of us had eaten it before, but it was really good. I expected it to have a chewier, grittier texture more like some shellfish, but it was very tender. It really tasted like a mushroom more than anything else (D called it a cross between shrimp and a mushroom). So ceviche and escargot have both been moved from the "slightly scary" food list to the "very tasty" food list.

Today will be busy. Starting with getting ready to go so I can hit the grocery store when it opens at 8. Then I'm running 10mi at 9 on the gym treadmill (hoping our treadmill parts get here soon!). After that is family phone calls, dust/vacuum/mop, dealing with the mail and paying bills, practicing piano, hopefully going to hot yoga (or doing it here), and going to a concert this evening. Actually, now that I have it all written out, it doesn't seem like that much. Plus many of the things (running, piano, phone calls, yoga, going to the concert) are things I want to do rather than have to do. And the things I have to do are not that bad (i.e. not laundry).

Well, I guess I better get moving here. I love being the only customer at Trader Joe's when it opens. No stress about getting all your stuff bagged AND swiping your card by the time the cashier is done ringing you up. Ah, so nice. Have a good Saturday, all.

Chicago

No run today so I thought I'd give a little update on our Chicago trip. D. was helping out with a conference and I tagged along to do some sightseeing.

We got there last Sunday afternoon and had Ghiradelli ice cream sundaes for my birthday.

Nom, nom, nom, nom.

Then we hit Navy Pier for some ferris wheel action.

I actually took this photo. Very artsy, if I say so myself.

It was only slightly terrifying.

The next day I hit up the Lincoln Park zoo.

This is a sea lion getting its teeth brushed (and then rewarded with a fish- not sure how well that works).

And on a skyline boat tour on the Chicago river.

I took that one, too. I'm on a roll here!

The next day I went to the Museum of Science and Industry. One of my favorite exhibits was the Smart Home.

They also had this cute little R2D2 mailbox outside.

Monday and Tuesday mornings I got in a short run along a popular walk, run, bike, swim path along Lake Michigan. Nice views, but it was super crowded- even at 7am, which should miss most of the "before work" crowd and the tourists.

You would not catch me in that water. Those people are wearing wet suits!

And that's about it for Chicago other than tromping around the Miracle Mile area. Fun, fun, fun. I really enjoy Chicago!

So I'm a Puker...

Hiya! I'm back!

I've actually been back since Wednesday afternoon, but I've been busy busy busy getting back on track after a great trip to Chicago.

Today's run was pretty hard. It was supposed to be a warm-up plus 30 minutes in HR zone 3, but I think I pushed myself beyond that.

Distance: 5mi
Type: Tempo
Time: About 46 min total including the warm-up and cool down
Pace: A little over 9 min/mile

I warmed up for .5 mi and then did the core of the workout for the next 3.5 miles followed by a 1 mi cool-down. The first 1/2 mile of the tempo run time got lumped in with my warm-up so I don't know how fast I was going. The next three miles were done in 8:31, 8:20, and 8:04. The first mile pace was about right for a tempo run- I was really pushing myself at the end.

And then I puked. I have a really sensitive stomach when it comes to pushing myself during runs. Does anyone know how I can stop this? I puke after almost every race. It's really irritating! Do I just need to do more hard runs to raise my puke threshold?

Anyway, it was a good run even if it wasn't what was scheduled.

I did a few runs in Chicago along Lake Michigan Monday and Tuesday and caught up on the weight training I missed when I was gone on Wednesday. Tomorrow will be 11 miles.

I hope to do a longer post about the trip this weekend. Have a great Friday, everyone!

It are my birthday!

Morning!

Happy Birthday to me!!! As of 5:45am Eastern time I am 27 years old. Thank you to all the people who remembered me and will remember me today (it's only 7am after all).

I'm excited because I'm going to Chicago today with D and staying until Wednesday morning. He's working at and attending a conference, and I'm going to do some sightseeing, and we'll meet at the end of the day for dinner. I have a co-worker who used to live in Chicago, and she's had some great recommendations for places to see and go to eat. I'm planning to go to the Lincoln Park Zoo and take a skyline boat cruise on Lake Michigan, plus do some serious window shopping because our hotel is right on Michigan Ave.

But the most important thing is that this afternoon we have a date with the Ghiradelli Chocolate Shop for sundaes. Oh dear... it's right by our hotel... I'm glad I don't have an insulin resistance test scheduled for right after this trip.

I bid you adieu for a few days. If you really don't care about my birthday, but you love tomatoes and food prep, check out the previous post- I added some pics of our newest harvest.

Happy Birthday Day

First off, I want to wish a Happy Birthday to two of my favorite people in the world: my husband, D, and my dad. I hope you both have a wonderful day.

D started off his morning with some serious sugar.

I got up early and went to the donut shop to get a special surprise birthday breakfast for us. I bought two sprinkle donuts, a cherry one and a blueberry one. In typical Midwestern style, the woman working threw in an extra one with sprinkles "just because". We'd heard this place was great, and it certainly lived up to its reputation. Mmmmmm donuts.

I got in a recovery 4 miles before I went to the store. I'm pretty tired so I think I'm going to take an easy evening tonight rather than making up for my missed upper body workout yesterday. It's just so hot in the gym with no AC. Tomorrow is a no run day, and I think I'm just going to go to the gym and lift in the morning rather than do elliptical in the morning and weights in the afternoon.

Happy Birthday Tuesday

A couple people who are special to me are having birthdays today. :)

As for running, I was proud of myself for pulling it together to do a track workout this morning even though I'm a little tired. Here's the nitty gritty:

2.5mi w/u
1.01mi in 8:24:25 (8:19 pace)
400m RI
.76mi in 6:26:65 (8:28 pace)
400m RI
.51 in 4:13:10 (8:18 pace)
400m RI
.26 in 2:04:83 (8:06 pace)

Next speed workout is Friday morning. Speed isn't so bad when you run your intervals at the right pace (not as fast as possible).
